The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, presented on October 8 a national security plan, focused on investigation and intelligence and the strengthening of the National Guard under the command of the Army. The leftist president guaranteed that the so-called “war on drugs” will not return, undertaken in the government of conservative Felipe Calderón (2006-2012) and that exacerbated crime and the violation of Human Rights. Sheinbaum’s plan comes at a critical time after the brutal murder of a mayor in the south of the country and the new wave of violence in Sinaloa and Guanajuato. How effective will this model be to confront the violence that Mexico is experiencing? We analyze it in El Debate.
