In March 2023, more than one person smiled when Bandai Namco announced Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, the name behind which the new installment of Budokai Tenkaichi was hidden. Almost a year later and after presenting the 181 available fighters (variants included) in waves, we can finally say that Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is available for PS5, Xbox Series and PC through Steam. Behind this title we have Spike Chunsoft, the same team that has been in charge of all the installments of the Budokai Tenkaichi series.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is a 3D fighting game that is presented as “an authentic sequel and evolution of the” Budokai Tenkaichi series, whose objectives are “to preserve the essence of what made this saga popular.” This means that combat systems such as Dragon Rush to enable quick movements, the counterattack system and impact action have been maintained, while new features have been introduced. One of the changes has been to improve the normal movement so that it is as fast as running, and thus be able to perform a sprint short to move at a high speed with the run button.

As in most fighting games, in Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero there is a bar that charges during combat. In this title there are two mechanics to take advantage of this system. The Avenging Counterattack allows you to hit while absorbing an attack, a movement that seeks to replicate the speed of the anime’s attack and defense, while Super Perception is a command that allows you to counterattack before receiving different attacks. Additionally, the Vanishing Ki Assault action allows you to instantly approach an opponent and attack.

In the game modes section we have options that go beyond the usual local or online battles between two players. For example, Episode Battle is a solo mode starring eight characters who relive battles from the Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super animes. Son Goku is the one who has the most scenarios. More creative players can check out Custom Combat, a mode that allows you to create combat situations and share them with the community to be played online. You can also edit existing content, such as what the game itself will offer, to have a base.

The list of playable characters for Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero reaches 181 fighters, which becomes 182 if you have reserved the game to receive Goku (Mini) from Dragon Ball Daima. In the future, the roster will be expanded even further through a season pass, which will allow access to more than 20 additional characters from Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and Dragon Ball Daima.
