Guterres appoints British Tom Fletcher as new head of UN Humanitarian Affairs

MADRID 9 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has appointed the British Tom Fletcher, who was the United Kingdom ambassador to Lebanon between 2011 and 2015, as the new head of UN Humanitarian Affairs, replacing Martin Griffiths, who left the position for health reasons.

Fletcher, who is currently principal of Hertford College, at the University of Oxford (United Kingdom), “has strong experience in leading and transforming organizations” as well as “providing understanding of diplomacy at the highest levels.”

The new head of Humanitarian Affairs was a foreign policy and development advisor between 2007 and 2011. Among his achievements is that he led initiatives on education for refugees during the mandate of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Fletcher served as head of the Middle East peace process at the British Foreign Office between 1997 and 1998, while also having positions in Nairobi and Paris, Guterres’ office said in a statement.

The general secretary thanked Griffiths – who was appointed to the position after his predecessor, Mark Lowcock, announced his resignation for family reasons – for his “outstanding work, his committed service and his dedication”.
