EU calls on allies of warring parties in Sudan to avoid adding "more fuel" to the conflict

BRUSSELS Oct. 9 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The European Union has demanded this Wednesday that the countries that support the warring parties in Sudan withdraw their support and influence to find a peaceful solution to the open conflict between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the face of an upsurge in the fighting.

“We ask all parties and countries in the region that provide weapons and funds to the belligerents to withdraw their support immediately,” Foreign Affairs spokesperson Nabila Massrali said at a press conference from Brussels.

In this sense, he has reiterated that external actors have to work to resolve the hostilities and “avoid adding more fuel” to the crisis, once the parties have ruled out continuing peace negotiations. “Any external support for one side or the other will not contribute to the resolution of the conflict,” said Massrali, who has focused on the possible contagion of instability to the entire region.

This message comes after the RSF has assured that it will seek a military victory against the Sudanese Army after concluding the negotiations, in the midst of the major offensive against the country’s capital, Khartoum, by the Sudanese Army.

The official forces have Egypt as their main ally, while the paramilitary side has the support of the United Arab Emirates and maintains good relations with Russia.

In this context, the rebels accuse the Army of launching a “relentless war” after refusing to participate in a round of negotiations sponsored by the United States and the UN in Switzerland, considering that the RSF violated the Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) agreements signed in May 2023.

Sudan is mired in a civil war following hostilities that broke out in April 2023 amid increased tensions over the integration of the RSF into the Armed Forces. Violent clashes have derailed the transition opened after the 2019 overthrow of Sudanese President Omar Hasan al Bashir.
