Bashaga threatens again to enter Tripoli to take control of the country

Aug. 21 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The so-called Libyan Prime Minister appointed by the Parliament of the east of the country, Fazi Bashaga, has again threatened to enter the capital, Tripoli, to depose the Prime Minister of the Unity Government recognized by the international community, Abdul Hamid Dbeibé, in a new example of the administrative bicephaly that has plagued the country for years.

“Those who support Dbeibé are a minority group that looks after their own interests. I don’t think they are even more than 200 people,” Bashaga declared in a speech before notables from the Misrata tribes, collected this Sunday by the ‘Libya Observer ‘.

In his appearance, Bashaga reiterated his desire to enter the capital “peacefully”, but also declared himself ready to “use force if the forces that support Dbeibé resort to the use of weapons.”

As he has done on other occasions, Bashaga accused the Dbeibé government of “working against the interests of Libyans with the help of foreign countries” and of hindering the difficult process of transition in Libya towards democratic elections.

It should be remembered that Bashaga has tried to take control of Tripoli twice before giving up to avoid a serious armed struggle. Right now his government is based in the city of Sirte.

Dbeibé came to power after the historic 2020 ceasefire that ended a year of fighting between forces from Tripoli and from the east of the country, led by rebel marshal Khalifa Haftar.

The transitional government was mandated to take the country to elections last December, but they never took place due to divisions over the rules and the presence of controversial candidates, culminating in the controversial appointment of Bashaga.
