Germany’s Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, has asserted that the shooting at the synagogue in the city of Halle in 2019, in which two people died, served as a “warning” for the German authorities about the need to continue protecting security. of Jewish people and institutions.

Speaking on the eve of the fifth anniversary of this event, Faeser stressed that for the German Police and security services, the protection of Jews is an absolute priority. On October 9, 2019, an armed neo-Nazi tried to break into the Halle synagogue during the Yom Kippur holiday.

The Minister of the Interior has taken the opportunity to refer to the increase in anti-Semitic incidents in Germany over the last year, since the Hamas attacks against Israeli territory and the subsequent response of the Israeli Army against Gaza, which has already left almost 42,000 dead. and has provoked criticism at a global level.

“We stand on the side of the Jewish communities and the Jews of Germany, especially in the face of the repugnant hostility they are experiencing,” said the German Interior Minister, who has advocated countering “the murderous violence caused by extremism and terrorism of right-wing, hatred of Jews and racism with all the means” of the constitutional State.

Although the attacker failed to break through the synagogue door, he fatally shot a passerby and later a nearby Turkish grocery store, killing a customer. The perpetrator of the attack is serving a life sentence for two murder crimes and several other attempted murders.
