The EU extends sanctions against actors involved in the conflict in Sudan for one year

BRUSSELS Oct. 8 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The European Union agreed this Tuesday to extend by one year the sanctions imposed on those responsible for the conflict in Sudan, where clashes continue between the Sudanese Armed Forces (FAS) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their respective affiliated militias.

The EU ‘blacklist’ includes six individuals and six entities from both factions and are the bloc’s response to the attack on Sudan’s stability and political transition.

Sanctioned individuals are subject to EU travel restrictions, asset freezes and a ban on providing them with funds or economic resources.

At the beginning of the year, the EU agreed to sanction leaders involved in the civil conflict that broke out on April 15, 2023 due to strong disagreements regarding the integration process of the paramilitary group – now declared a terrorist organization – in within the Armed Forces. This situation caused the definitive derailment of the transition that opened in 2019 after the overthrow of Omar Hasan al Bashir’s regime.
