US disappointed by Russia's decision to deny consular assistance to convicted American

MADRID 8 Oct. () –

The spokesman for the United States Department of State, Matthew Miller, expressed this Monday his disappointment with Russia’s decision to deny consular assistance to American citizen Stefan Hubbard, who has been sentenced by a Russian court to six years and ten months in prison. for fighting alongside the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

“We have limited information about this case because Russia has refused to grant consular access (…) They simply refuse to do so. We are disappointed, as is often the case when they refuse to grant consular access. They have an obligation to provide it and we will continue pressing to achieve it,” he expressed during a press conference.

In that sense, he has indicated that Washington is “studying the case very closely” before taking its next steps in this regard. Hubbard, originally from Michigan and 72 years old, had acknowledged the facts of which he was accused, and that is that he was captured in April 2022 by Russian troops in the Ukrainian city of Izium.

According to Russian authorities, Hubbard had been living in Ukraine since 2014 and had signed a contract in which he received at least $1,000 a month to help Ukrainian forces contain the Russian invasion.
