MADRID 7 Oct. () –

This Monday, the Swedish Government submitted to Parliament the initiative to allocate military resources to the Atlantic Alliance, which will consist of a maximum of 1,200 soldiers, six warships and 24 combat aircraft.

The Swedish Foreign Minister, Maria Malmer Stenergard, has highlighted that this is a “historic” decision. “Sweden’s geographical location and our ability to support allies is crucial for NATO to be present in our part of Europe. Sweden assumes this responsibility,” he stressed, according to the newspaper ‘Göteborg Posten’.

In the case of the Swedish Navy’s contributions, they will mainly be minesweepers and maritime surveillance means. “My opinion is that the ships will be in Sweden and will be able to connect with the permanent NATO forces,” said Defense Minister Pal Jonson in statements to the newspaper.

Sweden and Denmark will contribute a battalion to NATO during 2025 for deployment in the multinational brigade present in Latvia. Half of the soldiers, about 600, will be sent by Sweden.

The rule establishes a maximum of 1,200 military personnel in total, including Army units, special forces units and amphibious units. In addition, the sending of eight combat aircraft with associated personnel is planned and a maximum of 24 combat aircraft is established that would have to be available for the Alliance.

For Jonson, these contributions do not weaken Sweden’s defense. “On the contrary. Sweden is safer and NATO is stronger with our integration,” he explained.
