( Spanish) –– The Negro River, the longest in the Amazon basin, reached the lowest level in its history on Friday, according to the Geological Survey of Brazil.
The river level reached the mark of 12.66 meters, the lowest recorded since monitoring began in 1902, 122 years ago. Projections indicate that it could reduce further in the coming days.
“The process of lowering the Negro River should continue throughout the month of October,” explained the manager of Hydrology and Territorial Management of the Regional Superintendency of Manaus, André Martinelli, in the statement released by the Geological Service.
However, Martinelli added that the rate at which the water level is reducing has slowed. “We went from a fall level of 23 cm per day to 14 cm per day and 11 cm this Friday,” he added.
The Negro River is the longest river in the Amazon basin and is one of the largest in the world in terms of water volume, according to Agencia Brasil, the state news agency, which adds that the drought in the region It affects more than half a million people.
