‘Snow White’ Reboot Star Rachel Zegler Responds to Backlash Over Her Comments Criticizing the Original 1937 Film: ‘It Made Me Sad’

The star of Disney’s live-action “Snow White” reboot, Rachel Zegler, is defending herself from the backlash she received after calling out the original animated film’s “bizarre” love story years ago.

in a new interview with varietyZegler accused her critics of taking her comments “out of context” after footage from a 2022 interview showed her criticizing the original film as dated in its depiction of the romance between Snow White and the prince who saved her.

“In all honesty, it made me sad that it was taken that way, because I believe that women can do anything. But I also think they can do everything,” he told the Hollywood media.

In the 2022 clip from that year’s Disney D23 Expo, Zegler commented that his film adaptation of the classic fairy tale was more modern.

“I just want to say that it is not 1937 anymore,” he said at the time, adding: “The prince will not save her and will not dream of true love. “She dreams of becoming the leader she knows she can be and the leader her late father told her she could be if she were brave, fair, courageous and sincere.”

Elsewhere, he commented that some parts of the original film were “weird” and said that the prince “literally stalks” Snow White.

Fans of the original Disney film “Snow White” and other cultural commentators criticized Zegler’s desire for a version of the classic story with modern gender norms built in. Since then, the actress has become the subject of ridicule and the next Disney film, due to be released in 2025, has been dismissed by many online film fans.

In his recent interview, Zegler explained that he never intended his comments to be offensive, stating that he only meant that the classic Disney character has goals besides falling in love with the prince.

She said: “I would never want to box someone up and say, ‘If you want love, then you can’t work.’ Or ‘If you want to work, then you can’t have a family.’ It’s not true. It has never been true. “It can be very disturbing when things are taken out of context or jokes don’t land.”

The actress also denied accusations that Disney was updating the love story for the modern era. “The love story is very integral. Many people wrote that we were not doing [that storyline] never again, we were always doing that; “It just wasn’t what we were talking about that day.”

As she continued, Zegler suggested that her comments were taken out of context by people who want to tear down famous women. Variety stated: “Zegler is not surprised by what she sees as people’s deliberate misinterpretation of her comments. It is something normal for a young woman who is outspoken in front of the public.”

The actress added: “I have seen broken women my entire life, my entire career. We will see it in the next elections. I fear we will witness this for a long time.

Sometimes we can feel like we are coming back; I certainly felt that way when that happened.”

In addition to the “Snow White” controversy, Zegler also sparked outrage for an anti-Israel statement he shared with X in August.

After thanking his fans for tuning in online to the first trailer of the movie “Snow White,” he added: “and always remember, free Palestine.”
