Russian Prosecutor’s Office proposes seven years in prison for a 72-year-old American accused of fighting with Ukraine

MOSCOW Oct. 5 (DPA/EPP) –

The Russian Prosecutor’s Office has requested a seven-year prison sentence for Stephen Hubbard, a 72-year-old American citizen accused of “mercenary activities” due to his participation in the defense of Ukraine against the Russian invasion.

The prosecutor has recommended that the sentence be served in a colony for criminals convicted of serious crimes, reports the Russian news agency Interfax. However, the State’s attorney has recognized that the age of the accused and his subsequent confession can be considered mitigating circumstances.

According to the agency, the American citizen is a native of the state of Michigan and had been living in Ukraine since 2014. After the Russian invasion of 2022, he joined a territorial defense battalion in Izium, a city in eastern Ukraine. The city, located in the Kharkiv region, was captured by Russian troops shortly after the war began.

The American citizen was taken prisoner of war during the fighting in April 2022. He is now being tried as a mercenary in Moscow because, according to the contract with the territorial defense, he was to receive a salary equivalent to about 1,000 euros.
