Today No Circulation on Saturday: which cars can circulate and which rest on October 5

HNC

It returns with the regularity of a Swiss watch. Or, obviously, with the seven-day regularity that makes us meet, each week with a Monday, a Tuesday, a Wednesday… and, of course, a Saturday.

And with that Saturday the Hoy No Circula Saturday returns. The specific restrictions of Hoy No Circula, the program devised by the CDMX Environment Secretariat (SEDEMA) that is applied in the 16 municipalities in Mexico City and in some suburban municipalities of the State of Mexico.

But, first of all, let’s go over the obvious. What is Today Not Circulating? We are talking about a project to improve the quality of the air we breathe. This project restricts the circulation of vehicles that go out onto the street to, obviously, reduce polluting emissions floating in the atmosphere.

A project that, as we say, is applied in the 16 municipalities in Mexico City and in the following suburban municipalities of the State of Mexico:

  • Atizapan of Zaragoza
  • Coacalco de Berriozábal
  • Cuautitlan
  • Cuautitlán Izcalli
  • Chalco
  • Chicoloapan
  • Chimalhuacan
  • Ecatepec de Morelos
  • Huixquilucan
  • Ixtapaluca
  • Peace
  • Naucalpan de Juárez
  • Nezahualcoyotl
  • Nicolas Romero
  • Tecámac
  • Tlalnepantla de Baz
  • Tultitlan
  • Chalco Valley

What cars and license plates does Hoy No Circula Saturday affect?

Once we have clarified this, how does the Hoy No Circula program work? How is it applied and what decides which cars are allowed on the road and which are not?

To be clear about all this, you should know that one day a week each car must rest at home based on its hologram number and its license plate number. These vehicles will do so as long as they have hologram 1 or hologram 2 and the restrictions will apply between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m..

But on Saturday, things are a little different. Because it will depend on the Saturday we are talking about and one or the other will have to stay home. This will depend on the hologram and the license plate number, with Saturdays remaining as follows:

  • Those that can circulate every Saturday
  • Those who have to rest every Saturday
  • Those who rest every other Saturday

Taking all this into account, the first thing to be clear about is that a car with a 0 and 00 hologram will be able to move freely and will not be obliged to stay at home on any day of the week, including Saturdays.

Those in hologram two, on the contrary, will have to stay home each and every Saturday of the month. It will be an added day each week and, therefore, they will have to rest two days a week.

The cars with hologram one, however, will only rest on Saturdays when it is their turn. This will depend on the last number on your license plate. If the number is odd, you will have to stay home on the first, third and, if necessary, fifth Saturday of the month. If it is even, they will do the same on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month in question.

In this case, as we are facing the first Saturday of the month of October, it will be the cars with hologram 1 and an odd license plate number that will have to stay home this Saturday, October 5.

Of course, we must keep in mind that there are some exceptions that allow the circulation of specific vehicles like any other day of the week. In this case, Hoy No Circula does not apply and, of course, neither does Hoy No Circula Saturday:

  • Those with hologram 0 and 00
  • Those that run on electricity, natural gas or are hybrids
  • Those who have a disabled license plate
  • All those dedicated to urban transportation services (includes funeral homes)
  • Those that offer school or passenger transportation
  • Those intended for public safety and/or civil protection

Pollution is not only making you live less and worse. It's also making you dumber

If you fail to comply with these restrictions, the fine will be 20 to 30 times the Measurement and Update Unit (UMA), which is equivalent to 1,924.40 pesos and even 2,886.60 pesos.
