Borrell reiterates to Edmundo González the need for an inclusive dialogue with guarantees in Venezuela

BRUSSELS 4 Oct. () –

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has reiterated before the main opposition candidate for the Venezuelan Presidency, Edmundo González, the need for an inclusive dialogue with guarantees to get out of the crisis in Venezuela after the elections of last 28 of July.

In his first meeting since Edmundo González settled in Spain, where he has requested political asylum after fleeing Venezuela and possible arrest, Borrell underlined the EU’s support “for the democratic aspiration of the Venezuelan people.”

Thus, he took the opportunity to condemn the repression of dissent by the Nicolás Maduro regime and reiterated that the way out of the crisis involves dialogue with guarantees between the parties. “Venezuela needs inclusive dialogue with guarantees for all parties towards a democratic transition,” he indicated in a message on social networks after meeting at the La Toja Forum being held these days in Pontevedra.

For his part, Edmundo González in his own message on social networks previously explained that both discussed the step of the Carter Center that presented the electoral records to the Organization of American States, OAS.

They also discussed the “next steps in the construction of democracy” in the country, where the opposition wants González to be sworn in as president on January 10.

The minutes presented by the Carter Center support the opposition’s victory in the elections last July, after which the National Electoral Center proclaimed Maduro’s victory without presenting any record of the results. This Thursday, Borrell gave credibility to the action of the American observer and appreciated that the evidence presented reflects “the results that have always been indicated.” “That Nicolás Maduro did not win the elections,” he indicated.
