Nearly 20 people die in a new jihadist attack in northern Togo

Around 20 people have died in a new attack perpetrated by suspected jihadists against a town located in the north of Togo, near the border with Burkina Faso, amid the deterioration of security in this area and due to fear of expansion of groups terrorists from the Sahel towards West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea.

The attack was carried out on Wednesday against a group of members of the security forces who were part of a deployment around a mine owned by the EBOMAF company in Fanworgou, a town located on the border, according to the Togolese newspaper ‘L’. Alternative’.

For now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, in which nine soldiers and ten EBOMAF workers died. The Army sent reinforcements to the area after the attack and deployed helicopters to deal with the situation and ensure that the assailants retreated into the area.

Togo was relatively safe from the jihadist violence that has devastated its northern neighbor Burkina Faso and other countries in the Sahel region for most of the last decade, although it declared a state of emergency in June 2022. after an attack in Kpékpakandi that left eight soldiers dead.
