The four officers affected by the US measures are Bob Kagarura, former commander of the Wamala Regional Police, Alex Mwine, former commander of the Mitanya District Police, Elly Mowanya, former senior commissioner of the UPF and deputy director of the Criminal Investigations Division; and Hamdani Twesigye, former Deputy Police Inspector assigned to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
“The reports that Kagarura, Mwine, Twesigye and Womanya were involved in serious human rights violations, documented by Ugandan civilian courts, civil society organizations and independent journalists, are serious and credible,” said the State Department spokesperson. , Matthew Miller, through a statement.
In this sense, he stated that, “by publicly sanctioning these individuals,” Washington “reaffirms its commitment to advancing the Human Rights of all Ugandans and promoting accountability for those responsible for Human Rights violations.”
This round of appointments joins the growing list of Ugandan Government officials, including senior members of the Police and Prison Service, who have been banned from obtaining visas for alleged human rights violations or economic crimes.
