Google invents the impossible keyboard

Tippy Type, the keyboard cover for those with very long nails

Google Japan surprises us again with G-board two sides, a 360 degree keyboard, without beginning or endsince it is inspired by the geometric shape called Möbius band.

A Möbius band o Moebius is a ribbon that twists on itself and, when the ends are brought together, a donut-shaped design is created, which has no beginning or end. What in mathematics is called non-orientable object or ruled surface.

Google Japan is famous for its extravagant keyboards. A while ago he created the bar-shaped keyboard, where all the keys are in a row. Or the Morse keyboard, which only has… one key.

This is Google’s infinite keyboard

Its official name is double-sided Gboard keyboard. The idea left that some people have problems with single-sided keyboards.

So the challenge was to design a keyboard that could be typed on both sidesand also had no beginning or end. Something that fits the shape of a Mobius strip.

Google Japan calls it too 360 degree keyboardbecause you can turn it around, and orient it in any position, and you will still be able to type. You can see it in the opening video of the news.

This impossible keyboard from Google has 208 keys in a 26 x 8 ortho-linear arrangement in a Möbius strip.

It uses mechanical keys with MX switches, and as could not be missing today, it has its own LED lighting. But it is not wireless, it connects via USB Type C.

The big question is inevitable: Is it really practical for typing? The answer, watching the video, is a resounding no. If keyboards have not changed shape in 100 years, since the days of typewriters, there must be a reason…

But as Google itself recognizes, you always have the option of using it as a decorative Christmas wreath, with lights included, or as a future interdimensional portal.

If this Google double-sided keyboard, inspired by the Moebius stripit makes you curious, Google has gone up to Github the instructions and plans to print it in 3D.
