() – The outgoing Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, will be the next Secretary General of NATO, as announced this Wednesday by the Alliance.
Rutte will replace the current head of NATO, Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg, who has held his position since October 2014. Stoltenberg said Wednesday that he “greatly welcomes” the appointment of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as his successor.
“I warmly welcome the election of @MinPresMark Rutte as my successor by #NATO allies,” Stoltenberg said in a post on X.
“Mark is a true all-rounder, a strong leader and consensus builder. I wish you every success as we continue to strengthen NATO,” Stoltenberg added.
The North Atlantic Council decided to “appoint Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte as the next Secretary General of NATO” this Wednesday, a NATO statement officially announced.
Rutte will take up his new role on October 1, when Stoltenberg’s ten-year term as secretary general ends, according to the NATO statement.
The Secretary General is the highest international official of the Alliance. He chairs all of NATO’s main committees, is the organization’s chief spokesperson and chief of international staff.
