The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, confirmed the mobilization this Tuesday of “military resources” to the Middle East to “counter the threat from Iran” within the framework of the interception of Iranian missiles launched against Israel during the day as revenge for the death of the leader of the Lebanese Shiite party-militia Hezbollah, Hasan Nasrallah, and of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Ismail Haniye.
“In the face of the dangerous escalation of tensions in the Middle East, (Macron) has reaffirmed France’s commitment to peace and security for all in the region. For this reason, he has condemned in the strongest possible terms Iran’s new attacks against Israel “Committed to Israel’s security, France has today mobilized its military resources in the East to counter the Israeli threat,” reads a statement from the Elysée.
Likewise, Macron has reiterated the French demand that “Hezbollah cease its terrorist actions against Israel and its population”, while he has expressed his willingness to “act in favor of Lebanon”, demanding that “Israel end its military operations as soon as possible.” possible” when considering that “too many civilians are already victims.
In reference to the Israeli invasion, he stated that he hopes “that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon will be restored in strict compliance with UN Security Council resolution 1701.” He has also reaffirmed Paris’ commitment to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and urged the Lebanese to be united “at this critical moment.”
“France will support all those who act in this direction and will very soon organize a conference in support of the Lebanese people and their institutions,” he said, recalling “its determination to obtain a long-term agreement that guarantees the security of the populations both sides of the Blue Line.” As he stated, the displaced “must be able to return to their homes in complete safety, both in Israel and Lebanon.”
However, he has considered a new meeting of the UN Security Council “necessary”, which will take place this Wednesday, and has commissioned the head of diplomacy to make a new visit to the region to address a “reduction of tensions and find solutions.” lasting solutions to the current crisis in all its aspects, in particular with regard to the situation in Lebanon and Gaza.
Macron has asked that “all necessary measures be taken” to assist the French who are in the area and, “if necessary, come to their aid.” In turn, he has requested action to “prevent the possible repercussions of these latest events” in the “national territory and guarantee the safety of all.” Finally, he concluded that “it is necessary for all actors involved to exercise the greatest restraint.”
These statements took place after the head of state chaired a Defense and National Security Council on the situation in Lebanon and recent developments in the region in which the Prime Minister, Michel Barnier, participated; the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau; the head of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot; and that of Defense, Sébastien Lecornu.
France thus joins the confirmations in this regard made by the United States and the United Kingdom. The latter has limited itself to saying that British forces “have played their role” during the day to “avoid further escalation in the Middle East”, while Washington has detailed that two American destroyers, the ‘USS Buckley’ and the ‘USS Cole’, launched “dozens of interceptors” against the Iranian missiles, most of which were intercepted, although “minimal damage” was caused.
