United Nations Datathon 2024: Solutions for sustainable tourism in urban areas from data

The United Nations Datathon 2024 is a global event sponsored by the United Nations Statistics Division (DENU), in alliance with the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) of Colombia, the Ruta N Corporation – Medellín, the Mayor’s Office of Medellín – Special Science District, Technology and Innovation, the United Nations Regional Big Data Hub in Brazil, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Global Data Alliance for Sustainable Development (GPSDD), Amazon Web Services, (AWS), Esri and the United Nations Major Group for Youth and Children (UN-MGCY), and seeks to develop participants’ abilities to find ideas and solutions based on specific challenges identified.

The 2024 edition of this global competition will challenge participants to localize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the urban level, with a focus on the sustainable development of cities. The teams must address three fundamental topics: sustainable tourism, urban waste management and circular economy. They are expected to present innovative, data-driven solutions that balance economic growth, environmental preservation and community well-being.

Stake

Participants are expected to be linked to National Statistical Offices (NSO) or National Statistical Systems (NSS) – with partial funding if they come from developing countries – as well as academic institutions, research centers or think tanks. Self-financed teams may also participate, as long as they commit to having at least two members present in Medellín.
