How time flies, it’s been almost 10 years since Western Digital acquired Sandisk in an operation that involved the disbursement of $19 billion. Since then, the company has maintained both brands with its different product ranges.
Now, in an attempt to separate its product lines, Western Digital has stopped selling all NAND Flash memory-based devices under its own brand, moving them under the SanDisk brand umbrella. In fact, they have separated their websites and now we have, on the one hand, that of WD and on the other, that of SanDisk. So we can read it in the company website.
This includes all types of storage products, including memory cards or USB flash drives, but also SSD. In fact, if we go to the Western Digital website and try to enter the SSD and USB Flash drives section, it will automatically take us to SanDisk.
At the moment it seems that the products maintain their brand, and you can still find, for example, the WD_black SN850X SSDs on the Sandisk website. But everything indicates that the company is going to take the complete leap and also eliminate the WD name from its SSD lines.
In fact, on its website it states that They will create two different independent companies.
As announced on October 30, 2023, Western Digital plans to separate its hard drive and flash memory businesses, creating two independent, public companies with specific markets and a strategic focus. The separation will better position each company to drive technological innovation and product development, take advantage of unique business opportunities, expand respective leading market positions and operate more effectively with different capital structures. The creation of two specialized websites is a necessary step in the process of separating the company.
