Initially, “Nobody Wants This” seemed like a pretty appropriate name for Netflix’s new romantic comedy show about an unexpected relationship between a sex podcaster and a Jewish rabbi. Let’s just say that before its streaming premiere last week (September 26), I didn’t want this.
Its main premises seemed clunky, and the initial trailer suggested an overly glossy series that would make me cringe more than laugh. But I’ve already learned not to judge a book by its cover (or a Netflix series by its trailer), so with a weekend without plans thanks to a nasty common cold, I pressed play on “Nobody Wants This.” “With expectations that I would recover relatively quickly. Instead, I found one of my favorite shows of 2024.
Not since “Baby Reindeer” has a Netflix show hooked me so quickly, and I’m thrilled to see that “Nobody Wants This” is making waves in the market. streaming service straight from the door. It’s already the number one show on Netflix after less than a week, and that’s a spot it deserves. Here’s why this easy-to-watch show is one of the biggest surprises of the year…
Turns out I really wanted this Netflix show.
Moments after starting the first episode of “Nobody Wants This,” I was instantly reminded of another Netflix show, “Love.” This romantic comedy series starring Paul Rust and Gillian Jacobs ran for three seasons from 2016 to 2018 and focused on the unconventional romance between two mismatched characters in the sunny setting of Los Angeles, California.
The above is the same general outline as “Nobody Wants This,” so while this new Netflix show can hardly be labeled as an original, being tonally and thematically similar to a show that I considered one of the best Netflix originals is not. something bad A budding romance between two very different characters is a proven formula for romantic comedy success, and “Nobody Wants This” is the latest example of it being used to great effect.
Naturally, in a show of this type, chemistry between the leads is crucial, and Kristen Bell and Adam Brody sure have plenty of it. While Bell’s Joanne, a witty podcast host, and Brody’s Noah, a charming and kind rabbi, fall into fairly standard character archetypes, and their odd couple connection isn’t all that unique, because you quickly come to care about both of them. , it’s easy to get involved in your relationship.
There’s a really easy-to-watch charm to “Nobody Wants This.” Its comedic tone falls on the right side of funny banter without falling into the trap of being overly sarcastic, and its cast of characters are very likely, even those framed as obstacles to Joanne and Noah’s relationship have understandable motivations and are left unaddressed. . like cartoonish villains.
I also love that their episodes max out at 30 minutes, with some being only 21 minutes long. In our current era of broadcast television, the art of a 30-minute episode seems to be dying in favor of long chapters that can even reach the length of a feature film (looking at you “Stranger Things”), but there is something pleasantly digestible about the episodes that you can watch in less than half an hour. Plus, it makes “Nobody Wants This” immensely fun, as you can watch several episodes in less than two hours.
This Netflix show is already attracting attention
“Nobody Wants This” has only been on Netflix for a short time, but it’s already causing quite a stir on the popular streaming service. Over the weekend, it managed to dethrone the royal crime drama. “Monsters” from the number one spot, and I’ve also seen plenty of reactions on social media – an imperfect measure of success, but a good sign nonetheless.
It’s also not just me who has been swept up in this unconventional relationship. More in review added sign rotten tomatoes“Nobody Wants This” has managed to obtain an impressive 93% score with just 30 reviews. Additionally, its viewership score is off to an equally strong start at 91%. These may fluctuate as more items arrive, but first shots are very positive.
Tim Glanfield of the London Times notes that “it’s the old-fashioned chemistry between Bell and Brody that will keep audiences coming back,” while Mike Hale of the New York Times praised the show’s “smooth romantic comedy flow.” Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times he called it “lively and pleasant, with likeable, or eventually likeable, characters.” These are all sentiments I very much agree with.
It’s not just the leads that get praise from critics, either (even if the Bell and Brody partnership is the show’s foundation). “Bell and Brody are joined by a supporting cast of veteran scene-stealers, and creator Erin Foster has also given their story a specificity that distinguishes it from the typical meet-cute about mismatched lovers,” said Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter.
Of course not all has fallen under the spell of this ingenious Netflix show. Nandini Balial RogerEbert.com went against the grain and declared the show “A romantic comedy series short on both romance and comedy.”
You need to stream ‘Nobody Wants This’ on Netflix
If you’re looking for your next Netflix binge, I have good news: your search is over. “Nobody wants this” is, ironically, exactly what you want right now. The length of its light-hearted episodes makes it very convenient to watch a couple of installments even when you’re short on time, and its laid-back comedy tone makes it a great Netflix show to watch when you’re in the mood for something light (or happen to be sick. Believe me, it’s a great sick show).
Kristen Bell and Adam Brody are instantly likable as individuals and the couple has more than enough on-screen chemistry for you to care about their relationship, too. Even though almost all of their friends and family are begging them to give up on their budding romance, you’ll support them in finding a way to make it work. And that’s the true test of a great romantic comedy.
