September 30 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Secretary of the United States Department of State, Antony Blinken, held a telephone conversation this Sunday with his French counterpart, Jean-Noel Barrot, about the importance of using diplomacy to avoid an “escalation of the conflict” in Lebanon, where the Israeli bombings during the day on Sunday have left more than a hundred dead.
Based on this, they have agreed that these diplomatic efforts must be accompanied by a political process to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, according to a statement shared by State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
Likewise, they have talked about ways to resolve the conflict in the Gaza Strip through a ceasefire that allows the return of the hostages. Furthermore, Blinken has once again highlighted Israel’s “right to defense.”
It should be noted that Barrot is currently in Beirut to meet with several officials from the Lebanese Government and the UN on Monday in what is the first visit by a high-level French diplomat since the start of the Israeli bombings.
The head of French diplomacy has announced its arrival along with twelve tons of medical material, which will be used to treat a thousand seriously injured people. He has also stated that he will be in charge of the protection of civilians, since two French citizens have already died since the start of the air attacks.
