Baghdad's Green Zone closed amid massive protests over Nasrallah's death

September 28 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Iraqi authorities have closed the Green Zone of Baghdad, the fortified area where the main headquarters of the Iraqi Government and the United States Embassy are located, after the massive protests over the death of the general secretary of the Lebanese party-militia Hezbollah, Hasan Nasrallah, on Friday in an Israeli bombing.

“The Al Alawi Gate 9 has been closed to civilian traffic and entry will be restricted exclusively to those with Green Zone identification cards,” explained a security forces official quoted by the Iraqi Safaq news agency.

Hundreds of sympathizers of the Shiite factions have gathered at the entrance to the Green Zone, near the Suspension Bridge, with the intention of entering the security zone and reaching the US Embassy.

“Directives have arrived from the United States to the embassies in Iraq and Syria to raise the alert level in anticipation of any possible attack,” added another source.
