The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed this Saturday the death of the Secretary General of Hezbollah, Hasan Nasrallah, who died in an Israeli bombing in Beirut, Lebanon.

“According to the information we have, Hasan Nasrallah, secretary general of Hezbollah, has died,” the Quai d’Orsay said in an official statement.

The text also calls for “guaranteeing the security and protection of civilians” in Lebanon and refers especially to “the French who are in the region.”

Paris maintains “contact with the Lebanese authorities and with France’s partners in the region to avoid any destabilization and outbreak.”

Meanwhile, the French Prime Minister, Michel Barnier, has stated that the situation in Lebanon is “extremely serious” and has expressed his “concern” about the “safety” of the French residing in Lebanon. “I am not going to make any further comments because this is not the place today,” he noted from Mâcon, in Saône-et-Loire, on a trip to a firefighters’ congress.

“We are following this tragic situation and we are also concerned about the safety of our compatriots who are there,” he noted.

The Israeli Armed Forces announced this Saturday the death of Nasrallah after the intense bombardments they launched during the afternoon and night of Friday in the suburbs of the southern area of ​​Beirut, a stronghold of the organization.
