Habib welcomes ceasefire proposal and wonders if Israel “isn’t fed up with endless war”
September 27 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Foreign Minister of Lebanon, Abdallah Bou Habib, emphasized this Thursday before the UN General Assembly that the solution to regional tensions, which have led Israel to carry out bombings that have left almost 700 dead in Lebanese territory in what This week is precisely the end of the Israeli “occupation.”
“What we are experiencing today is the absence of a sustainable solution. This is a consequence, it is not the cause. The cause is the occupation. And there is no other explanation. To affirm otherwise would be a waste of time. Whenever there is occupation there will be instability and there will be war,” Habib emphasized during his speech.
Following this, he has asked the international community to act “urgently” to prevent the current situation “from getting out of control and producing a domino effect that makes it impossible to contain this crisis” which “will transform into a black hole that will engulf international peace and security”.
“The crisis in Lebanon threatens the entire Middle East with the worst if the situation continues as it currently is and if the world remains motionless,” he insisted.
Likewise, he has attacked Israel for “continually radicalizing” and for extending the war to Lebanese territory, where the “systematic destruction of villages” is taking place, “collective punishment against the population” and the “burning of agricultural lands with white phosphorus”.
Furthermore, he has spoken about the “detestable” and “disgusting” explosion of beepers and other types of electronic communication devices, supposedly belonging to members of the Lebanese Shiite militia party Hezbollah, which “cost the lives of dozens of people, including children and women, and caused thousands of injuries, hundreds of them in critical condition.
The head of Lebanese diplomacy has also recalled that his Government has tried to resolve the border disputes with Israel on numerous occasions and that this country “has constantly evaded the issue” or “has ignored the issue.”
In this sense, it has reiterated its commitment to a solution based on the resolutions of the UN Security Council, the United Nations Charter and International Law.
“The return of displaced Israeli people to their cities and their settlements cannot be achieved through war, it cannot be achieved through bombing, fighting, hostilities or the displacement of the Lebanese people,” he added.
THANK YOU FOR THE REQUEST FROM THE USA AND FRANCE
That is why he welcomed the request made by France and the United States the day before for a 21-day ceasefire between the Israeli Army and Hezbollah. “The shortest path to their return is a complete and immediate ceasefire, as stipulated in the treaty between the United States and France,” he added.
Habib has considered that this ceasefire will help “guarantee” the reestablishment of stability on the border and the return of the displaced.
“Isn’t Israel fed up with endless war since 1948? When will the time come for Israel to give peace a real chance? Will Israel not adopt the path of peace? When will this happen instead of using the language of fire and steel?” he asked.
