The British head of government calls on Israel and Hezbollah to “end the violence and move away from the abyss”
September 27 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, stated this Thursday before the United Nations General Assembly that man-made conflicts, which have driven the “vast majority” of humanitarian needs, divert geopolitics from the rule of law ” towards brute force and aggression”.
“After 20 years of progress in fighting poverty, disease and ill health, war is one of the main reasons why progress has stalled. It is a man-made catastrophe, that has weakened the cause of cooperation, has sown political division between the North and the South and has diverted the geopolitical orientation,” he declared during the 79th period of sessions of the organization.
Starmer lamented that “around the world there are more conflicts burning with increasing intensity, with terrible consequences in Gaza, Lebanon, Ukraine, Sudan, Burma, Yemen and elsewhere.” For this reason, rights based on freedom, justice and peace “seem to be far away” because “conflicts now affect more countries than at any other time in the history of this Assembly.”
“I fear that a feeling of fatalism has set in,” he expressed, mentioning an “era of polarization, impunity, instability, of a dismantling of the United Nations Charter.” “Our task is to say no, we will not accept that this will lead to increasing conflict, instability and injustice. Instead, we will do everything we can to change it,” he declared.
In this sense, he addressed the situation in the Middle East and took the opportunity to call on Israel and the Lebanese Shiite militia party Hezbollah to “end the violence and move away from the abyss.” “We need an immediate ceasefire to lead to a diplomatic agreement (…), because further escalation benefits no one,” he asserted, indicating that “it offers nothing but more suffering for innocent people on all sides.” and the prospect of a broader war that no one can control.”
The head of the United Kingdom Government has indicated that “this is closely related to the situation in Gaza, where, once again, we need an immediate ceasefire.” “We are all ashamed that the suffering in Gaza continues to increase. The answer is diplomacy, the release of all hostages and the unrestricted flow of aid to those in need,” he indicated, adding that “it is the only way to break this devastating cycle of violence.
He has also urged to work for peace in Sudan, “and for an adequate response to the worst humanitarian crisis that the world is suffering today”, while he has shown his “firm” support for Ukraine while “exercising its right to legitimate defense”.
