The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, has called Israel’s policy “desperate and dangerous” in the context of the escalation with the Shiite militia party Hezbollah in Lebanon, which raises fears of an expansion of the conflict in the Middle East.
“The endless escalation must stop. Dragging Lebanon into this spiral is irresponsible. These appeals, including those addressed to the Government of Israel, have been in vain so far. This cannot last any longer,” he stressed during his speech to the 79th Assembly. General of the United Nations.
Michel has assured that Israel “has the right to defend itself in compliance with International Law and from the principle of proportionality”, although he has insisted that “an immediate ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip is necessary, according to the decisions of the Court International Justice (ICJ).
“Every civilian life counts. We therefore condemn the indiscriminate attacks that affect the civilian population. It is a tragedy for the Palestinian people. The EU is acting for lasting peace within the framework of a two-state solution living freely and safely,” he added.
In the same way, it has reiterated the EU’s condemnation of the “terrorist” attacks carried out by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on October 7, 2023 and has demanded the release of all hostages held in the Palestinian enclave.
Michel has also referred to Tehran’s support for its partners in the Middle East, as well as for Moscow in the context of the war in Ukraine. “Iran and Russia practice the same recipes: the nuclear threat, imperialist ambition and support for illegal terrorist groups to destabilize their proximity and beyond,” he concluded.
