The head of government says that the Israelis “are spreading terror among the Lebanese in full view of the world, which watches idly”
September 26 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Lebanon’s interim Prime Minister Nayib Mikati on Wednesday called on the UN Security Council to take action against Israel in response to the “brutal practices of the Israeli enemy” against the Lebanese state and people, in the context of the escalation between the Israeli army and the Lebanese Shiite party-militia Hezbollah.
“The aggressor claims that it only targets fighters and weapons, but I assure you that hospitals are full of wounded civilians, including dozens of women and children. The question is: who can guarantee that such attacks will not be launched against other states if deterrent measures and decisive sanctions are not taken against the aggressor?”
Mikati said he hopes to return home “with an explicit stance,” calling for “an end to this aggression and respect for the sovereignty and security” of Lebanon, where “the number of martyrs and wounded is increasing” after “hundreds of civilians have lost their lives in just a few days and hospitals are “overwhelmed, unable to accept more wounded.”
The Lebanese Prime Minister stressed that Israel is violating its sovereignty “by sending its warplanes and drones into its skies, killing civilians, including young people, women and children, destroying homes and forcing families to flee in harsh humanitarian conditions.” “They are spreading terror and fear among Lebanese citizens in full view of the world, which watches idly,” he lamented.
“Lebanon is today the victim of electronic cyber aggression and of air and sea aggression that could turn into land aggression and a full-blown regional war (…) We are witnessing today an unprecedented escalation in which new tools, especially electronic tools, are being used to harm my people,” he denounced.
After regretting that “today the world is unable to stop the current humanitarian tragedy” in the region, he asked the Council to “assume all its responsibilities and adopt a decisive position to put an end to the difficult situation” and pave the way for diplomatic solutions. “We are not asking for charity. We are asking (that our legitimate rights be respected) in accordance with international law,” he concluded.
In this regard, Mikati recalled that “the current tensions do not arise out of nowhere, but are the result of an accumulation of conflicts and aggressions that have never been radically resolved.” “We continue to witness Israeli violations of our sovereignty 24 hours a day by air, sea and land,” he said, indicating that “these repeated violations undermine all stabilization efforts and threaten the entire region with an explosion at any moment.”
The escalation of clashes between Israel and Hezbollah – an Iranian-backed group that has significant military and political clout in Lebanon – has raised fears of the possibility of an expansion of the conflict into the Middle East. In this context, the Israeli army has confirmed that it is preparing for a possible ground incursion into Lebanon with a view to “continuing to cause damage to Hezbollah.”
