The Republican Party in the US House of Representatives has begun proceedings to investigate the recent visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Pennsylvania as a possible “foreign interference” in the upcoming US elections in November, given that it is one of the states in which the presidential race appears to be the tightest.
House Oversight Committee Republican Chairman James Comer has launched an investigation into the possible “use of taxpayer-funded resources” by the US administration to bring President Zelensky to Pennsylvania to “campaign” for the country’s current vice president and Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris.
According to the Republican body, in 2019 the House of Representatives – then controlled by the Democrats – impeached the now Republican candidate but then president, Donald Trump, for “abuse of power” under the theory that he also used Zelensky “to benefit his 2020 presidential campaign” despite the lack of evidence of irregularities.
“Now, the Biden-Harris Administration is transporting the same foreign leader on a flight funded by American taxpayers to Pennsylvania, a swing state for Harris’ campaign,” the Republican Oversight Committee has stated on its official social media profile, where it points out that, if the facts are confirmed, it would be a case of “abuse of power and misuse of taxpayers’ money.”
President Zelensky recently visited the city of Scranton, where he visited a plant that produces 155-millimeter artillery shells, which Ukraine has requested. According to official data from the US administration, Scranton is the second city in the country with the largest population of Ukrainian origin.
