Turkish authorities on Wednesday sent some 30 tons of humanitarian aid to Lebanon in a sign of support following the wave of bombings carried out in recent days by Israeli forces against alleged targets of the Shiite party-militia Hezbollah in the south of the country.
Lebanese Health Minister Firas Abiad has confirmed the arrival of the supplies at Rafik Hariri International Airport in Beirut, the capital of the country, where the Turkish ambassador, Ali Baris Ulusoy, is also staying. Abiad explained that the supplies – consisting mainly of medicines and medical supplies – arrived on a cargo plane.
“The arrival of the Turkish plane is a sign of solidarity with our people in the face of Israel’s attacks,” said the Lebanese minister, who specified that the country’s authorities contacted the Turkish government on Monday to request assistance.
He also warned that the Israeli army continues to “increase the scope of its bombings in Lebanon,” which has led to “an increase in the number of victims and injuries and, consequently, in the demands of the health sector,” according to information collected by the newspaper ‘Daily Sabah’.
Ulusoy, for his part, confirmed that this aid was delivered in just 48 hours following instructions from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, while stressing that it is a “gesture” to the Lebanese people, who “are going through a difficult time due to Israel’s growing aggressiveness.”
