Colombian Senate urges Petro to recognize Edmundo González as Venezuela’s president-elect

( Spanish) – The Colombian Senate approved a proposal on Tuesday urging President Gustavo Petro to recognize Edmundo González Urrutia, candidate of the opposition Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), as president-elect of Venezuela.

The decision was approved by 48 votes in favor and six against and was promoted by Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, of the Centro Democrático party. After the vote, the legislator celebrated the approval and considered that with it the Colombian Senate “is in tune with world democracy.”

“We support the congresses that defend democracy and freedom. It was fair and necessary for the Colombian Congress to support the Venezuelan people in the struggle to achieve freedom,” said Uribe, referring to similar resolutions approved by the European Parliament and the Spanish Congress.

has contacted the Colombian Presidency for comment on the Senate’s call to the Executive Branch and is awaiting a response. The Colombian president is in New York to participate in the United Nations General Assembly.

Almost two months before the July 28 presidential elections in Venezuela, several countries in the Americas and other continents have expressed doubts about the proclamation of Nicolás Maduro as the winner of the elections by the National Electoral Council (CNE) without the results of the electoral records by voting table having been published. Some countries in the region have even said that there are elements that indicate that the true winner was Edmundo González Urrutia.

So far, Petro has avoided congratulating Maduro or acknowledging a possible González Urrutia victory. Together with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil and Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico, he has sought to mediate in Venezuela’s post-election conflict and has called for the publication of the minutes of each voting table as a measure to make the race transparent.
