Security forces kill ten suspected Al Shabaab members in southern Somalia

September 25 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Somali security forces have killed around ten suspected members of the terrorist group Al Shabaab in a new operation against the organisation, linked to Al Qaeda, in the province of Jubaland, located in the south of the African country.

Military sources quoted by the Somali news portal Goobjoog News have indicated that the operation was carried out in Janay Abdalá, near the city of Kismayo, where a “preventive” action was launched in response to terrorists’ plans to carry out an attack.

“We have successfully neutralised around ten militants and wounded many more during the operation,” said a Somali army officer. The town was recently captured by Somali forces following clashes with Al Shabaab, which is said to be trying to regain control of the area.

Somalia has in recent months stepped up offensives against Al Shabaab with the support of clans and local militias as part of a series of decisions taken by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who promised upon taking office in May 2022 to put the fight against terrorism at the heart of his efforts to stabilise the African country.
