Journalists at Italian daily La Repubblica go on strike over "serious interference by editor"

The journalists of the Italian newspaper The Republic They have called a strike for Wednesday and Thursday to protest against “the serious interference in journalistic activity by the publisher and its companies”, namely the GEDI group, owned by the Agnelli family.

Journalists protest against interference, especially on the occasion of the ‘Italian Tech Week’ event (Italian Technology Week), organised by Vento, one of the companies that controls the Agnelli investment fund Exor Ventures, and for which the newspaper has prepared a 100-page special, to which many companies have paid a contribution, according to the editorial staff.

“For some time now we have been denouncing attempts to subject our colleagues to practices that are far from correct ethics and respect for the national convention,” denounces the newspaper’s editorial board. The Republic.

In a statement, the journalists explain that “the management must make all possible corrections and safeguards to strengthen the protection structures of all content on The Republican issue on which a motion of censure against the current director has already been voted on in recent months.”

But also, they add, “We turn to the editor – and not the owner – of The Republic John Elkann (grandson of Gianni Agnelli) so that he has a deep respect for our dignity as professionals and the value of our newspaper.”

“A newspaper with its own history and identity that cannot be trampled on. The democracy that we defend every day in our pages also depends on mutual respect for roles in the workplace,” they add.

The GEDI Group registers an average of 5.5 million daily userswhich makes it one of the largest publishing groups in Italy and Europe and includes newspapers such as The Republic and La Stampa and magazines like National Geographic as well as radio stations and advertising and communication agencies.
