During the early hours of Friday, August 19, officers entered the episcopal curia, where the religious lived who could not leave the diocese for more than two weeks. Along with him, five priests and three lay people were also arrested. The whereabouts of the bishop, a staunch critic of the Daniel Ortega government, are unknown.

In the early hours of this Friday, August 19, Nicaraguan police authorities raided the episcopal curia where Bishop Rolando Álvarez, a strong opponent of the Daniel Ortega regime, was staying. The religious was arrested along with five priests and three lay people.

“Urgent. At this time, the National Police has entered the Episcopal Curia of our Diocese of Matagalpa”, they published on the official account of the Diocese on Facebook at dawn.

The arrest, described as a “kidnapping” by the local press, occurs at a time when tensions between the Catholic Church and the Nicaraguan political sphere are on the rise.

Without details of the reasons for the police procedure, the whereabouts of the religious who was confined in the Curia 16 days ago before the siege of the security forces is not known.

The headquarters was surrounded by members of the security force after Álvarez denounced the closure of five Catholic stations and demanded respect for freedom of worship.

These events were repudiated by opposition politicians, members of the Church, journalists and other people opposed to the Ortega Administration who are in exile.
