Leader of civil group arrested in Ghana after police clash with protesters

September 24 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Ghanaian police announced on Monday the arrest of the leader of the civil group Democracy Hab, Oliver Barker Vormawor, following this weekend’s demonstrations in the capital, Accra, in which clashes broke out between protesters and police officers, who arrested around 40 people.

According to a brief statement posted on Facebook, Vormawor has been arrested “for the various illegal acts in which he participated on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22.”

The day before, it reported the arrest of 42 people at the protests, alleging that they had been seen attacking police officers, obstructing traffic, causing damage, and “disturbing the peace.”

“All suspects, including some leaders of the group, are in police custody and will face justice in court. Police are looking for the rest of the criminals, including Oliver Vormawor,” he said.

The group accused police of using violence and intimidation to suppress their peaceful protest, which was aimed at addressing national issues such as economic hardship and corruption ahead of presidential elections in December.

Democracy Hub noted that these actions violate citizens’ right to protest and undermine the democratic principles that the police are supposed to protect. It recounted several instances in which officers allegedly used tear gas, water cannons and physical force to disperse them.
