Chinese authorities on Monday accused Taiwan’s military of being behind a series of cyber attacks against Chinese targets and called on the population to stand up against such acts of “anti-propaganda sabotage” against the Chinese government.
China’s Ministry of National Security has attributed the attacks in question to the group Anonymous 64, which it links to Taiwanese forces, and has stated that its objective is to “spread content that denigrates the political system of mainland China and its main policies” through the Internet, but also through devices such as television channels and “all types of screens,” according to a statement.
However, Taiwan’s own Ministry of Defense has denied these accusations and accused Beijing of “bullying” the island’s authorities. “The current situation and the threat of cyberattacks by China is serious. The communist army continues to use ships, aircraft and cyberattacks to harass Taiwan, and this undermines peace in the region,” it said.
Taiwanese authorities have repeatedly accused Chinese groups of spreading disinformation online or carrying out cyber attacks on the island, which Beijing still considers a province under its sovereignty.
