The capitalisation of the Spanish stock market rose by 8% in August, to 1.207 billion euros

September 22 () –

The market capitalisation of listed companies in Spain increased by 8% in August, to 1.207 billion euros, compared to the same month in 2023, according to statistics from the Spanish Stock Exchanges and Markets (BME).

The monthly increase compared to July was 2%, while in these time periods the stock market value of companies dedicated to consumer goods has risen significantly due to the impact of Inditex: it went from being worth 170,448 million in July to 183,327 million euros in August.

Related to this, according to BME statistics, the companies with the highest capitalisation at the end of August were Inditex, with 152,653 million euros, Iberdrola, with 81,589 million euros and Banco Santander, with 69,662 million.

25.750 MILLION IN DIVIDENDS DISTRIBUTED IN AUGUST

For their part, Spanish listed companies distributed 25.75 billion euros among their shareholders until August, which is 15% more than in the same period in 2023, according to the stockbroker’s files.

Specifically, of the amount received by shareholders in the first eight months, the majority corresponded to dividends at a rate of approximately 25.5 billion.

As regards the return of share premium, listed companies returned another 160 million to their shareholders.

The amount that has been used to remunerate shareholders until August in the current financial year is already higher than all the amounts paid in the total years 2020 and 2021, in addition to matching the figure for 2022, since those years had to deal with the circumstances brought about by the pandemic.

The amount paid so far is expected to exceed the figure for 2023, when €30.3 billion was distributed, given that important months for shareholder payments such as November and December are still looming on the calendar (the sum of the two months in 2023 involved the disbursement of more than €6 billion for shareholders).

However, going into the details of August, according to the data to which Europa Press had access, it is worth noting that in the eighth month only 173 million euros have been paid, 70% less than in the same month of 2023 – then 566 million were paid -, although it is true that August is typically a period of low activity in the industry due to the holiday period and that it is just after the largest month on average – only this past July 5.9 billion euros were distributed.

In fact, the majority of dividend payments in August have been made by Aedas Homes, which approved at its general shareholders meeting the payment of 100 million euros on 1 August.
