September 23 () –
UN Secretary-General António Guterres met this Sunday in New York with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, and the European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Jutta Urpilainen, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
During their meeting, they discussed cooperation between the UN and the EU on a number of global issues such as the situation in Afghanistan and the Middle East, the war in Ukraine and sustainable development. They also discussed the approval of the Pact for the Future on the same day, according to a statement from the UN Secretary-General’s Spokesperson.
The aim of this pact is to launch ambitious reforms of the UN and its agencies so that the international community can react to crises and wars in order to make the world a fairer place. Among the proposed reforms are reforms of the UN Security Council and adjustments to the international financial system so as not to harm the so-called global South. It also includes a proposal for global regulations on artificial intelligence.
