At least 25 dead from recent monsoon rains in the Philippines

At least 25 people have died as heavy monsoon rains hit the southwestern Philippines in four successive storms, the Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said on Sunday.

Thirteen other people have been injured and eight more are missing due to the passage of storms ‘Ferdie’, ‘Gener’, ‘Helen’ and ‘Igme’. Six of the missing are from the Mimaropa region.

In total, 1,449,293 people from 1,963 districts in 13 regions of the country have been affected. Of these, 23,033 people from 5,635 families are currently staying in 193 shelters and evacuation centres and 40,231 people from 9,194 families are receiving aid outside official centres.

The Council also estimates that damages of 22.5 million pesos (about 362,000 euros) have been caused to 48 public structures, as well as damages of 4 million pesos to 2,345 houses that have been destroyed. Damages to agriculture have reached 600.8 million pesos (about 9.6 million euros). In addition, 122 road sections and 14 bridges have been damaged.

Authorities have distributed aid worth 47.9 million pesos (about 771,000 euros) to 50,947 affected families.
