Comoros president reappears in public after being attacked with a knife last week

September 19 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Comoros President Azali Assoumani made his first public appearance on Thursday since being stabbed last week amid speculation about his health.

Images broadcast upon his arrival at the Council of Ministers meeting show the president with a bandage on the left side of his head, according to the Comores Infos website. Assoumani, who has not made any statements to the press, has greeted several of those present before entering the Presidential Palace.

The opposition has even called for more transparency regarding the president’s state of health due to the lack of explanations for the president’s absence from the public ceremony to celebrate the birth of Mohammed last Sunday and the fact that only people in his inner circle were allowed to meet with him.

The exact injuries sustained by Assoumani in the incident are not known. The attacker, identified as a 24-year-old soldier, died in custody after being arrested and his body was handed over to his family and buried.

Assoumani won the presidential election in January 2024, which was marked by calls for abstention by the opposition, which denounced fraud. The president came to power in 1999 during a coup d’état and in 2018 restrictions on re-election were removed following a referendum on constitutional reform that allowed him to run again and win the 2019 elections.
