Seismic alert will be sent to mobile phones on September 19: IFT

Mobile phones that will receive the alert will be those that are compatible with the Cellular Broadcasting Service (CBS), a system that allows the reception and processing of alert messages for risk or emergency situations due to earthquakes, hurricanes or floods, whose technology is designed to give priority to the timely and unaltered transmission of communications and alert messages for risk or emergency situations.

Since September 13, 2022, the telecommunications regulatory body published in the DOF the technical provisions for devices to support the CBS system, and, from that date, manufacturers had 180 calendar days to integrate the new rules into the system of their devices.

In April 2012, only 3% of devices were compatible with the system, but at present – says the IFT – it is unknown how many cell phones are capable of supporting the alert system. However, due to the measures requested by decree, it is likely that most smartphones will be compatible with CBS technology.

What will the alert message look like?

Once the cell phone receives the alert message, it will immediately appear on the screen and vibrate, in addition to emitting a distinctive sound, which will last approximately eight seconds.

It is important to note that users will not receive the notification message if the smart device is turned off or out of coverage at the time the alert message is broadcast by mobile phone companies.

The Institute stressed that in order to distribute alert messages, it is not necessary to have a balance and/or data to receive the message, since it is a free service.
