September 17 () –
The French National Assembly’s board has accepted on Tuesday the processing of the motion presented by La France Insoumise (LFI) to try to remove the head of state, Emmanuel Macron, a “victory” in the words of the left that, however, now faces a complex process that makes it practically impossible for it to reach a conclusion.
The left has asserted its majority at the table and, by twelve votes to ten, the body that governs the functioning of the Lower House has accepted that the Law Committee study the motion, which comes with the endorsement of 81 deputies and more than 300,000 signatures.
The Socialist Party agreed at the last minute to at least promote the study of this initiative, which if successful would mean the dismissal of the French president. If the commission gives the green light, a two-thirds majority would be needed in the plenary session of the National Assembly, which seems far away and is even more unattainable in the Senate.
However, LFI, which ran alongside the Socialists within the New Popular Front for the recent legislative elections, has applauded this milestone on social media, recalling that on September 21 they have again called for demonstrations against Macron for the appointment of the conservative Michel Barnier as Prime Minister.
“Where there is a will, there is a way,” proclaimed the MP and former presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon, while the head of the LFI group in the Assembly, Mathilde Panot, spoke directly of a “historic day”, according to Franceinfo. Not in vain, in the Fifth Republic there is no precedent for the plenary session of Parliament even debating a motion of this magnitude.
