Authorities in Burma reported Monday that the death toll from flooding and landslides caused by Typhoon Yagi as it passed through the country has now risen to 226, with 77 people still missing.
According to the latest figures, 56 localities across Burma have been affected by flooding caused by a storm that moved in from Vietnam a few days ago, which has claimed nearly 300 lives so far.
In addition, more than 120,000 livestock have been killed and more than 600,000 hectares of crops have been submerged in Myanmar, as well as infrastructure such as roads, homes and schools. An estimated 2,116 properties have been damaged and another 158,373 have been flooded.
The military junta that has ruled the country since the coup d’état in February 2021 has announced the opening of 438 aid centres and thousands of shelters, while deploying more than 163,000 army and police personnel, as reported by the news portal Eleven Media Group.
An estimated 320,000 people have been forced to flee the country in the grip of a political and humanitarian crisis. The typhoon, which made landfall in the region late last week, has claimed more than 400 lives in Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.
