Pokémon: for the first time in 20 years, Ash Ketchum will appear in a video game

Pokémon already has more than 26 years of history, it has an anime of several seasons that is still ongoing, thousands of collectibles and many dozens of video games. However, something curious is that none of them are based on the anime; not even Ash Ketchum, its protagonist, properly appears as a 3D model in the games, but this will change very soon.

You read it right, as strange as it may seem, Ash Ketchum, the young man from Paleta Town will arrive in Passio. Passio? Yes, the region in which it takes place Pokemon Masters EXa free-to-play title that debuted in 2019 for mobile.

Pokemon Masters EX will receive N and Hilda with very special outfits

Well, this game is still getting content and yesterday was a very special day, as a new update arrived that will include a lot of content planned for July.

This month is Tanabata in Japan, which is basically a holiday related to stars and wishes, which is based on a traditional Japanese story that was derived from the Chinese Qi xi tradition.

In case you missed it: Pokemon Masters EX celebrated 40 million downloads with a very special buddy couple.

Well, on the occasion of this celebration on July 7, the developer DeNA will bring to the game new versions of N and Hilda, characters that debuted in Pokémon Black & White, but they will wear a themed costume and will be accompanied by their partner Pokémon Zoroark (technical partner) and Grappoloct (shiny, attack partner), respectively. Interestingly, the selection of this couple relates very well to the traditional story and event.

DeNA announced through a letter to players some of next month’s additions such as recruitments, events, as well as the addition of Tyrogue as a Pokémon that will hatch from Eggs, making it the first Pokémon from a region other than Johto in leaving Eggs.

Will Ash Ketchum be in Pokemon Masters EX?

And Ash Ketchum? Well, what happens is that as soon as the new update was available, the dataminer community got to work and discovered all the secrets that were hidden in the files and one of them was a 3D model of Ash (via pm).

That’s not all, along with the model were found text details and banners for what appears to be an anime integration event, meaning the character will appear in-game to promote Season 25. Pokémon Ultimate Journeys (Pokemon Ultimate Journeys) which will be the third part of the main subseries Pokémon Journeys. This series is ongoing in Japan, where it is known simply as Pocket Monstersbut it is not yet released anywhere else in the world.

It has already been announced that the series will debut in the last months of 2022, so apparently The Pokémon Compnay wants to promote the premiere and one of the ways was taking Ash Ketchum to Pokemon Masters EX, oddly enough. It is for this reason that Ash Ketchum will appear with this modern design and not the original from the first season.

The above took the fans of the series by surprise, because they know very well that this character had never appeared in a video game properly, with a model, assets and everything related.

In fact, in the main games only indirect references to Ash have been made, the first time it was in an official Pokémon game was in Pokemon Play It!, but only in dialogue. The character first appeared in Pokémon Puzzle Leaguean anime-themed puzzle title from Pokemonbut it was only seen in images taken from the anime and was something secondary, since what the player controlled was the panel with figures.

In Pokémon Sun & Moon, for example, the main character receives a letter from Ash Ketchum, although it is not explicitly revealed. In addition, in the challenge to defeat the Pokémon Mimikyu Totem, a photo apparently of Ash with his Pikachu can be seen.

Ash’s arrival at Pokemon Masters EXSo it has a very special meaning. Early details suggest that the character won’t be controllable, but instead players will have to defeat him using their Trainers, so for the first time Ash could face the original protagonist of the video games, Red, as well as other sync pairs.

Something interesting, however, is that the DeNA letter mentions that there will be an event that will allow you to join forces “with a special sync pair” and they invite players to wait and see what pairs are coming.

It’s unknown if there are any plans to add Ash as a playable character, but there’s no reason not to, honestly. Also, we have no doubt that many will want to spend their jewels to get Ash pairing up with Greninja.
