( Spanish) – An accident on the Hiram Bingham Highway, which leads to Machu Picchu, left at least 23 people injured, most of them tourists, after a bus from a tourist company went off the road, authorities from the National Institute of Civil Defense of Peru, INDECI, reported to .
Among the injured tourists are Italian and Mexican citizens, although not all of the victims have been identified as investigations and rescue operations are ongoing, said the director of the Decentralized Directorate of INDECI in Cusco, Francisco Quevedo.
The Peruvian official explained that the truck, from the company Consettur Machu Picchu, was returning from the ruins of Machu Picchu when the road accident occurred, and that the injured are being transferred to Ollantaytamo, and then transferred to hospitals depending on the severity of their injuries.
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the SRE, confirmed that four Mexicans were injured with multiple fractures and that they are working with Peruvian authorities to transfer the injured to the nearest hospitals.
“The people involved were travelling in a group organised by a travel agency, which is also involved in supporting the rescue along with local authorities,” SRE explained in a post on the social network X.
