Two people killed in Al Shabaab attack on security checkpoint in Somalia

September 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least two people have been killed and three others injured in an attack by the Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group Al Shabaab on a security checkpoint controlled by paramilitaries north of the town of Baidoa in southwestern Somalia, on the same day that the jihadists launched an assault on a military base in the Lower Juba region (south).

The attacked military base is located in the village of Jana Abadalla, 60 kilometres north of the city of Kismayo, where numerous soldiers have been killed, according to military sources cited by the Somali news portal Garowe Online.

The assault on the strategic position, which serves as a link between many cities in the region, has resulted in victory for Somali security forces after intense fighting.

Al-Shabaab, linked to al-Qaeda, controls much of southern and central Somalia and is responsible for the deadliest attacks in the country’s history. Authorities have recently stepped up their operations against the terrorist group with the support of local clans and militias following the arrival of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in May 2022, who promised to put the fight against terrorism at the heart of his efforts to stabilise the African country.

However, attacks on government institutions, hotels and restaurants continue to occur both in the capital, Mogadishu, where Islamists believe a Western way of life prevails, and in other parts of the country.
