Venezuelan Interior and Justice Minister Diosdado Cabello announced the arrest of two Spanish citizens, two Americans and a Czech, implicated in an alleged operation aimed at carrying out “terrorist” acts.
“Two Spanish citizens were recently arrested in Puerto Ayacucho (Amazonas, south), José María Basua and Andrés Martínez Adasme,” Cabello said at a press conference, reporting on a plan to supposedly “generate violence” and “destabilize” the country.
A Czech citizen and two other American citizens identified as Estrella David and Aaron Barren Logan were also arrested, he added after recalling the arrest of an American soldier days ago in Venezuela.
According to Cabello, more than 400 weapons were seized in the operation and some of those captured were seeking to take “a group of mercenaries” to Venezuela.
The minister spoke of an alleged plan to attack President Nicolás Maduro and executive authorities, following the elections of July 28 in which the president’s reelection was proclaimed amidst accusations.
The minister said that the two Spaniards arrested are two citizens “linked to the National Intelligence Centre (CNI)” of Spain.
During her statement, Cabello described it as a “hate attack by the Spanish Minister of Defense during the presentation of a book,” which she indirectly linked to the CNI.
