Aug. 18 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Government of Peru has withdrawn this Thursday its recognition of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), controlled by the Polisario Front, and has appealed to the “territorial integrity” of Morocco, validating the autonomy plan presented by the king, Mohamed VI, for the former Spanish colony.
Lima’s diplomatic shift comes after a telephone conversation between its Foreign Minister, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Mackey, and Morocco’s, Nasser Burita, and just a few days after the new Government of Colombia, led by Gustavo Petro, resumed relations with the SADR.
The Peruvian Foreign Ministry has stated in a statement that “it values and respects the integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and its national sovereignty, as well as the autonomy plan” of 2017, which does not contemplate in any case the right of self-determination of Western Sahara .
The Executive of Pedro Castillo has advocated for “a political, realistic, lasting and consensual solution” to the territorial dispute and has supported the work of the UN special envoy, Staffan de Mistura, while aspiring to “strengthen” its bilateral relations with Rabat.
In his note, Lima has stated that, as of today, there is no longer any “effective bilateral relationship” with the SADR authorities and that, therefore, he not only withdraws recognition of this administration but also breaks “all relationship “.
