September 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported on Friday the death of 14 members of the Islamic State (IS), including four “leaders” of the terrorist group, as a result of a joint operation carried out in western Iraq at the end of last month.
“On August 29, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces and Iraqi security forces conducted a joint raid in western Iraq that resulted in the deaths of 14 ISIS operatives,” the U.S. military announced on its account on social media X.
Washington has said that this operation, which targeted the terrorist organization’s leaders in the region, has served “to disrupt and degrade IS’s ability to plan, organize and carry out attacks against Iraqi civilians, as well as against American citizens, allies and partners throughout the region and beyond.”
CENTCOM has specified –following a “post-raid assessment”– that among the dead were “four leaders” of the group. They have been identified as “Ahmad Hamid Husayn Abd al Jalil al Ithawi, responsible for all operations in Iraq; Abu Hammam, responsible for overseeing all operations in western Iraq; Abu Ali al Tunisi, responsible for overseeing technical development; and Shakir Abud Ahmad al Issawi, responsible for overseeing military operations in the west” of the country.
Following the announcement, Central Command reiterated its commitment “to the lasting defeat” of IS, given the continued threat it poses not only to the United States, but also to its “allies and partners” and to regional stability.
The jihadist group has several hundred fighters spread across various mobile cells in Iraq, where it has carried out several attacks in recent months, despite the territorial defeat of its “caliphate.”
During this time period, the Iraqi government has launched several operations that have resulted in the deaths or capture of dozens of suspected Islamic State members, including several described as senior members of the terrorist organization.
